Wheel of life - it sounds like a gameshow doesn't it? Well, if it is a gameshow then the prize is a great understanding of your life and the first steps towards making a change!

The wheel of life is used in coaching to help you gain perspective and to help you and your coach form some great goals for you to work towards. The wheel helps you look at all the different aspects of your life, from relationships to careers and finances to health and wellness. It gives you a great structure to really think about where you are now and where you want to be.

This article will explain how to complete a wheel of life and provides you with templates and examples so you can create your own.

Getting started with the Wheel of Life

The first thing to do with your wheel of life is choose the life areas you would like to have on your wheel. You can either use the ones in template one below, or choose template two and fill your own areas in. The word cloud below should help you with some ideas. You can put a couple of things together if they work for you e.g. health and wellness or home and family. Most wheels have eight segments, but you can have more or less if you would like.

Once you’ve had a good think…

Once you’ve chosen your areas it’s time to start thinking about where you are with them, on a scale of 1-10. To help, it’s good to make a few notes about each area. This also gives you something to chat through with your coach afterwards.

Once you’ve done that it’s time to score each area. Be really honest about where you feel you are now, on that 1-10 scale and mark a cross on the line. You then join the crosses together to create your wheel.

So, you have your Wheel of Life, what next?

Completing the wheel not only gives you a great physical representation of the areas of your life, it also creates the time and space for you to think carefully about them.

Take a moment now to think about which areas you would like to improve or change (they may not be the ones you marked lowest). What goals would you like to set to make those improvements and changes? How will you achieve those goals? What resources, internal and external, will you need and how will you be able to measure your progress?

We all need a little help and guidance at times to help us change our lives. There are lots of tools and techniques that a life coach can work with you on to help with setting and achieving your goals. Whether it’s face to face sessions, video coaching or coaching in the great outdoors, there are lots of options available.
